FREEDOM
by MICHAEL LABASH(Berkeley,CA) - www.lavapen.com
This month's design comes from Berkeley, CA artist MICHAEL LaBASH.
I met Mikee in the early/mid 90's when I first was online and became friends with legendary Bay area performance artist Frank Moore thru his message board. Frank and I became friends quickly on line and eventually I went to SF and we met and our friendship lasted for many years. Mikee was very involved with Frank helping to design his publications and later his websites, and he always used his own wild art and personal graphics styles when doing so. So that is how I got turned on to Mikee's art.. thru Frank Moore. But Mikee has been doing things in the Bay area for a long time. he worked either full-time or freelance for many of the top design firms such as Primo Angeli, Steinhilber Deutsch & Gard and Spiegelman & Associates designing everything from corporate identity programs to magazines to package design. In the mid-80s he spent a few years working exclusively as a freelance designer, mostly designing packaging for the software game company Electronic Arts. (E/A Games) Some of the titles he designed include John Madden Football, Populous, Powermonger, Mail Order Monsters, Julius Erving and Larry Bird go One-On-One and the Bard's Tale series. Also during this time, he started a recording studio, Dancing Dog, in Emeryville and was the singer/songwrtier in the band Mr. Dog, which later became The Counting Crows ... but that's another story …
In 1993 he started his own design company, New Possibilities Design, which he still operates today. He designs for both print and the web and examples of his design work can be found at the New Possibilities Design web site. While all this was going on (it started back in high school), Michael LaBash was drawing like mad and has been published in zines throughout the world and in the small press and the underground. His art has been used for Instagon flyers, and even a few very limited CD's. Mikee is a very friendly and awesomely creative person, I am happy to call him my friend and was very excited to invite him to design a sticker for the club. He has an amazing website with lots and lots to explore.. so take some time and check it out. www.lavapen.com
